The project partners Naturschutzzentrum Kreis Coesfeld e.V., the Institut für Landschaftsökologie der Universität Münster, EFTAS Fernerkundung Technologietransfer GmbH and NLU-Projektgesellschaft have successfully participated in a contest organized by the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen. The aim of the contest was to get initiatives for the NRW program 'regional competitiveness and job security'. The contribution of the project partners "FFH-Identitäten vernetzen - Westfälisches Naturerbe kennen und erleben" is one of the winners that are subsidized by the regional government and the State Ministry of Climate, Environment, Agriculture, Nature and Consumer protection in Nordrhein-Westfalen.

From 2012 till 2015 the project partners will carry out an innovative nature tourism pilot project that allows NATURA2000 areas to be explored by means of modern GIS, GPS and communication technologies. As an example an information web portal with a connected mobile GPS based navigation and information system will be developed for the NATURA 2000 areas in the Coesfeld region.

+++ Plantations versus forest: remote sensing technology for the monitoring of sustainable rubber plantations within the German-Chinese project SURUMER. +++

About 90% of the world rubber productions comes from tropical Asia. The mostly large scale plantations have many unfavorable effects on the local ecosystem. The goal of the project SUROMER (Sustainable Rubber Cultivation in the Mekong Region) is to develop a sustainable method for growing rubber trees that secures economic as well as ecologic interests. The German Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) supports the project with about 4,6 mln. Euros.

For this project the following organizations work together: University of Hohenheim (coordination), University of Stuttgart, the Humboldt University Berlin, the Leibniz University Hannover and EFTAS Fernerkundung Technologietransfer GmbH in Münster and their partners in China.

The goal of EFTAS is to develop a practical tool for the automatic recognition of rubber plantations. Because of the resemblance with natural forest these plantations cannot be found with current remote sensing methods.

+++ Kick-off BMBF project SASCHA in West-Siberia corn-belt +++

Münster, Tjumen, August 2011

Climate change will affect the West-Siberian corn-belt, an area of global importance for carbon dioxide storage, food production and biodiversity. Increasing dryness and a shift of favorable arable land towards northern latitudes will massively influence land use. The ecological and socio-economic impacts are investigated in the project SASCHA since August 2011, co-financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, to develop sustainable land management concepts and adaptation strategies to meet these climatic challenges.

SASCHA is coordinated by the Ecosystem Research group of the Institute of Landscape Ecology (ILÖK) at the University of Münster, Germany. In cooperation with university institutions from Münster, Osnabrück, Berlin and Kiel, as well as scientific partners from Tjumen (Russia), EFTAS is responsible for collecting land use data and to establish a monitoring system to assess and quantify land use changes to support future local planning decisions.

+++ Birdrace +++

In 2011 EFTAS Fernerkundung Technologietransfer GmbH and the NLU Projektgesellschaft mbH did again join forces with a team for the 8th nation wide German Birdrace. The German birdrace is a yearly event organized by the Dachverband Deutscher Avifaunisten (DDA). On May 7th 152 teams in Germany tried to find as much bird species as possible in 24 hours in their 'own' area. The EFTAS-NLU team searched the area of the city of Münster. The 12 teams in Münster agreed to make the race as green as possible. Therefore they used bikes instead of cars. The EFTAS-NLU team managed to find 121 bird species witch is not bad for a non coastal area. Nationwide place 36 of 152 was reached and on the sponsor ranking even the 6th place. The € 605 will be donated to the project ornitho.de, an internet portal to collect, show and process bird observations in Germany.

+++ Research project MS.MONINA on European biodiversity monitoring successfully launched +++

Salzburg/Münster, February 21th 2011
In the spirit of the International Year of Biodiversity 2010, an international team of researchers, small and medium enterprises and users has recently launched a GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) project exploring biodiversity as a 'new emerging area' of global attention. The project called MS.MONINA offers remote sensing based monitoring services for observing and managing the state of NATURA 2000 sites and other precious habitats outside the existing network of protected areas to reduce the loss of biodiversity. With the kick-off meeting last December in Salzburg (Austria), a first step was taken towards defining and implementing new concepts and methods combining earth observation (EO) data and in-situ data with the aim to support public authorities in implementing policies and measures raging from local to European application levels. This project with partners from 9 European countries is lead by the University of Salzburg. EFTAS GmbH is responsible for the development and demonstration of national and regional monitoring tools to support habitat monitoring using Remote Sensing. Furthermore EFTAS is involved in all local and European service developments to provide service integration across all MS.MONINA service levels. Soon first pilot applications in a range of study areas will demonstrate the value and importance of monitoring for conservation of biodiversity. While European nature conservation will substantially benefit from this initiative, the tools and services developed also have a global impact. The project will support the GEO (Group on Earth Observations) societal benefit area of biodiversity and demonstrate the power of EO-based methods for monitoring sensitive ecological sites in general.
