New approaches to combining SAR monitoring, AI and BIM met great interest in Frascati.
How can complex infrastructure be monitored even more precisely in future? What role do SAR data, AI and digital twins play in this? These were precisely the issues that were discussed in depth at the ESA-ESRIN INSIGHT 2026 event in Frascati.
Our colleague Dr Chia-Hsiang Yang presented the latest results of the ‘GIGASAR’ project there under the title: ‘Integrating Multi-SAR Deformation Monitoring with BIM-Based Infrastructure Analytics (GIGASAR Service & Platform)’.
SAR meets BIM: A new approach to infrastructure monitoring
Our presentation focused on an integrated platform that links SAR data with BIM models, using the city of Ahlen as a case study. The aim is to analyse deformations and changes to infrastructure more efficiently and to intelligently link digital building models with up-to-date Earth observation data.
“The positive feedback from ESA and the SAR community has shown just how relevant the combination of SAR monitoring, BIM and AI is for future infrastructure analyses,” explains Dr Chia-Hsiang Yang.
The in-depth discussion following the presentation was particularly engaging: topics included the question of how precisely SAR point clouds can be mapped to individual BIM elements – despite complex building structures.
Focus on AI and future SAR missions
The event highlighted the current direction of development within the SAR community: AI-based methods are becoming increasingly widely used, whilst new Copernicus SAR missions are intended to ensure a stable and freely available data set in the long term. SAR enables the monitoring of infrastructure and ground movements independently of optical sensors.
For us, the conference demonstrated one thing above all: the combination of SAR, AI, BIM and GeoIT opens up new possibilities for resilient infrastructure and future-proof monitoring solutions.
